We've ceramic coated over a dozen cars around Perth, from a Lamborghini to our own work van, which wears an 8-year coating and has been rained on and bird-bombed ever since. This is what we've actually seen, not what the bottle promises.

Is ceramic coating worth it? The short version
It comes down to how long you'll keep the car, where it sleeps and how it gets washed. Here's our honest call for the situations we hear about most.
| Your situation | Worth it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping the car 3+ years, parked outside | Yes | The coating has years to pay you back in quicker washes and protected paint. |
| Brand-new car | Yes, best time | The paint will never be in better condition to lock in. |
| Black or dark paint | Yes | Dark paint shows every wash mark and water spot, and a coating makes it far easier to keep right. |
| Selling within a year | Probably not | A thorough detail before the sale does more for the price. |
| Only ever uses brush car washes | Not yet | The brushes wear the coating out. Change the habit first. |
| Wants stone chip protection | Not on its own | A coating won't stop chips. That's paint protection film, which we don't install. |
What is ceramic coating, in plain words?
A ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to your car's clear coat and hardens into a thin, slick, glass-like layer. Wax sits on top of the paint and rinses away. A coating becomes part of the surface, so water, dirt and droppings struggle to grip it.
It's the closest thing your paint gets to a screen protector, minus the bubbles you get when you fit one yourself. We use coatings from Gtechniq, Gyeon and DIY Detail, matched to how long you want it to last.
How much does ceramic coating cost in Perth?
At Aurex, from $1,490 for a 3-year coating up to $2,990 for 8 years, with full paint prep included at every tier. These are "from" prices for a small car in good condition, confirmed once we've seen it.
| Tier | Coating life | What's done | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aurex Guard | 3 years | Full prep, single-stage correction, graphene coating on paint | $1,490 |
| Aurex Shield | 5 years | Multi-stage correction, paint, wheels and glass coated, maintenance kit | $2,190 |
| Aurex Apex | 8 years | Top-level correction, paint, wheels, glass and trim, interior coating, annual check | $2,990 |
Most of that price is the preparation, not the bottle, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it. The full breakdown, including what pushes a price up, is in how much ceramic coating costs in Perth.
How long does ceramic coating last?
Anywhere from about 3 to 8 years, depending on the coating and how it's looked after. Our tiers are rated at 3, 5 and 8 years, and our 8-year coating is the one DIY Detail rates for up to 8 years.
Treat that number as the best case. It assumes you wash like a surgeon, and most of us wash like we're late for something. Gentle hand washing gets you close to the rating; brush car washes and harsh soaps cut it short.
Ceramic coating vs wax: which is better?
A coating lasts years and a wax lasts weeks, so over the life of a car the coating does far more work. Wax is cheaper each time you apply it, but you're applying it again and again.
- Wax: sits on the paint, gives a warm shine, fades within weeks, needs redoing often.
- Ceramic coating: bonds to the paint, lasts years, makes washing quicker, resists droppings and grime far better.
Wax is a lovely Sunday ritual. It's just a ritual you'll be repeating every few weeks, forever.
Does ceramic coating actually work? What we've seen
Yes, and the clearest proof is parked in our own driveway. Our work van wears DIY Detail's 8-year coating on the paint and a Gtechniq coating on the windscreen, and it gets no special treatment because it's a work van.
A bird left us a present on the front of the van. Before anyone reached for a towel, it had slid down the panel by itself. On bare paint in the Perth sun, that's the kind of mess you scrub at, and the kind that can leave a mark.
We put the same 8-year coating on a Lamborghini, and the photo below is its engine cover after water hit it. The beads sit up tall and roll straight off, which is exactly what you want to see.
Customers notice the difference too. This came from Sarah, in a recent Google review:
"Mat is a wonderful human and spent extra time on my car to ensure a perfect finish. Being very car proud, I have put off having a detail until I met Mat! Highly recommend his personal service and extra touch! I have rebooked my next 2 details to bring my ceramic coat back to life and enjoy my car again"

Is ceramic coating worth it on a new car?
Yes, it's the best time to do it, because the paint is in the best condition it will ever be in. We still decontaminate and lightly correct it first, because even new cars pick up swirls in transport and dealer prep.
The goal is to keep that showroom finish, not to admire it for a month before introducing it to the car wash brushes.
When ceramic coating isn't worth it
A coating isn't the right call for every car, and we'd rather lose a sale than sell you one you'll resent. Skip it, or wait, if any of these sound like you:
- You're selling soon. You won't own the car long enough to get the benefit.
- The car only ever sees brush car washes. They'll wear the coating out early. Change the wash first.
- You want it chip-proof. A coating is very thin. It won't stop stone chips, keys or trolleys.
- The car lives in a garage and rarely goes out. It still helps, but it has far less to protect against.
How do you look after a ceramic coated car?
Hand wash every 2 to 4 weeks with a pH-neutral, coating-safe shampoo, dry it with a clean microfibre towel, and keep it away from brush car washes. That's most of the job.
Gtechniq, one of the coating makers we use, says a quick pass through a touchless car wash isn't a substitute for a careful hand wash, and that a coated car shouldn't need washing more than about once a month. Brush washes are worse again, because the brushes grind at the coating and put swirls back in.
When a coating stops beading, it usually isn't worn out. In our experience it's mostly buried under bonded grime and minerals, and a decontamination or mineral cleanse brings the beading back without re-coating.
Perth's sun is the other reason to stay on top of it. The Bureau of Meteorology rates a UV index of 11 or more as extreme, and Perth summer forecasts often get there. A coating takes that daily hit so your clear coat doesn't have to, as long as it's kept clean enough to do its job.
